46 And Mary said,
“My soul magnifies the Lord,
megalunei ‘magnifies’.
47 and my spirit (emotional centre) rejoices in God my Savior,
agalliaō ‘to be overjoyed’, ‘to exult’, always has a religious connotation: a joy or rejoicing due to the Holy Spirit or brought forth by an act of God (as here).
48 for he has looked on the humble estate of his servant.
For behold, from now on all generations will call me blessed;
49 for he who is mighty has done great things for me,
and holy is his name.
50 And his mercy is for those who fear him
from generation to generation.
The term mercy often implies not only a sympathetic consciousness of another’s situation but also a readiness and/or activity to help him in distress.
51 He has shown strength with his arm;
he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts;
brachiōn (‡) ‘arm’, often as a symbol of God’s active power,
proud because of honoured position’ (used here), ‘proud because of strength’, ‘proud because of intelligence’
52 he has brought down the mighty from their thrones
land exalted those of humble estate;
‘he has torn rulers from (their) thrones’
‘the great ones, he has made them down, those who are not great, he has made them up’
53 he has filled the hungry with good things,
and the rich he has sent away empty.
54 He has helped his servant Israel,
in remembrance of his mercy,
55 as he spoke to our fathers,
to Abraham and to his offspring forever.”
